Why Studio Membership?

Mar 2, 2026 | general

There comes a moment for many potters when a class just isn’t quite enough anymore.

You’ve learnt the basics. You’ve found the joy of clay. You’ve experienced that quiet focus, that lovely muddy satisfaction, that tiny spark of pride when something comes out of the kiln and it’s yours.

And then a thought appears:

What if I could do this more regularly? What if this wasn’t just a course… but part of my life?

That’s where Studio Membership begins.

At Cheshire Clay Studios, membership isn’t simply about access to equipment. Yes, you’ll have use of six kilns, eight pottery wheels, generous workspace and a wide range of tools. Yes, you can develop your own projects at your own pace. Yes, you’ll gain the freedom to explore your own style and ideas.

But the real value of membership is something deeper.

It’s belonging.

Our studio members aren’t just people who hire space. They are part of a vibrant, supportive creative community. They share ideas, solve glazing mysteries together, celebrate kiln openings and quietly cheer each other on.

There is something incredibly powerful about making alongside others.

Some members join after completing classes with us. They realise that clay has become more than a hobby — it’s their weekly reset, their creative outlet, their thinking space. Others arrive with previous experience and are looking for a professional, well-equipped studio where they can grow independently without the isolation of working alone at home.

Membership offers structure and freedom in equal measure.

You can work on your own projects.
You can refine your technique.
You can challenge yourself.
You can simply come in and centre clay after a long day at work.

There is no pressure to produce.
No expectation to sell.
Just space to make.

Over time, something subtle happens. Skills deepen. Confidence grows. Conversations become friendships. The studio starts to feel familiar in the way only creative spaces can — aprons on hooks, favourite wheels, glaze test tiles quietly building up stories on the shelves.

And because we run a thriving programme of workshops, Raku firings and specialist events, membership also connects you to ongoing learning. There is always something new to try, always another layer to explore.

Studio Membership isn’t the right step for everyone — and that’s okay. Some people are perfectly happy dipping in and out through classes and experiences. But for those who feel that pull to go further, membership is often the natural next chapter.

It’s less about “having access” and more about becoming part of something.

If clay has started to feel important to you — not just fun, but meaningful — then membership might be your next step.

And we would love to welcome you.

Summertime and the living is ……easy?!

We close Cheshire Clay Studios for two weeks at the beginning of August. We go mad, indulge ourselves and see our families on holiday for one of those two weeks (lovely time, thank you). However, the second week of ‘holiday’ is spent frantically refreshing one of the...

But I’m not Creative!

There’s no point in arguing with the hundreds of people who laugh nervously and shy away from our doors saying – “Oooh, I’m not artistic”, “I don’t have a creative bone in my body” or “I was always useless at art in school”. No, we can’t argue with them, as that is...

There’s no smoke without fire – and there was lots of both on our Raku day!

We were lucky enough to have Andy Mason come to deliver a Raku workshop for us in early March.  We spruced up our outside firing area with a lovely ‘Murial’ (if you are old enough and a Corrie fan you’ll get this reference!) which our technician Alex designed and...

Wishes for 2025

As most of us wish, we would like 2025 to be the year where there is an end to conflict both at home and abroad, and for people to feel safe wherever they live.  However, these sentiments are outside of our gift, so we must concentrate on what is possible for a...
