Spend an inspiring weekend learning from acclaimed ceramic sculptor Paul Smith, whose distinctive animal sculptures are  instantly recognisable for their bold forms, elegant flowing lines and expressive simplicity.
Drawing inspiration from the natural world, European folklore and the rich history of art, Paul has developed a unique sculptural style that captures the character and spirit of animals rather than every tiny detail. His work demonstrates how a few confident curves and carefully considered forms can create pieces full of life and personality.
Over this two-day masterclass, Paul will guide you through his highly successful handbuilding method, refined over more than 27 years as a professional ceramic artist. You’ll learn his innovative framework technique, using a simple external armature of rods to support the clay while your sculpture takes shape. This approach allows you to create larger, more dynamic pieces with confidence and opens up exciting new possibilities for working with clay.
Whether you’re completely new to sculpture or already have experience with ceramics, Paul’s relaxed and encouraging teaching style makes this workshop suitable for all abilities. There is no previous sculpting experience required—just a willingness to experiment, learn and enjoy the creative process.
Throughout the weekend you’ll create a series of animal sculptures while receiving plenty of individual guidance from Paul. As well as one-to-one tuition, there will be opportunities to share ideas, discuss techniques and learn alongside fellow participants in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
Your sculptures will be bisque fired after the workshop and will be ready for collection a few weeks later. Please note that an additional firing charge of £15 per piece applies.
Lunch, tea, coffee and refreshments are all included, so you can relax, immerse yourself in the creative process and enjoy two inspiring days of making in the welcoming surroundings of Cheshire Clay Studios.
