Joe Small produces high-fired stoneware and porcelain, inspired by ancient and contemporary East Asian ceramics. Building on his practical skills and previous geochemical research career, Joe adopts a holistic approach to ceramics, utilising locally sourced clays, rocks and wood ashes in his glazes. His kilns and other equipment are self-built and include novel tools to form ceramic screw threads. The form of his pieces and use of clay slips and textured decoration are created to accentuate his specialist flame reduction glazes and their molten reactions and nucleation on clay surfaces.
In this informal two hour workshop, Joe will explain how to make ceramic screwtops for vessels and participants will have the chance to try it out for themselves. Anyone who is interested in new and innovative techniques in clay will love this event!
